Petition to Appoint the U.S. Ambassador for International Religious Freedom
Just over a year after President Obama was inaugurated, Open Doors launched a petition asking him to appoint the Ambassador for International Religious Freedom (IRF) to oversee the Office of IRF at the State Department.
Almost 10,000 supporters signed our petition, which we sent to both President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton. On June 15th, 2010, President Obama announced his choice of Dr. Suzan D. Johnson Cook to be the next IRF Ambassador. Her nomination was not confirmed by the end of the 2010 term, but he re-nominated her in 2011.
The U.S. Senate held a confirmation hearing for Dr. Johnson Cook on March 29, 2011, and it remains to be seen whether the Senate will confirm her.
