Open Doors USA Urges Prayers
For Haitian Earthquake VictimsSad Haitian Girl

SANTA ANA, Calif. (Jan.13, 2010) – Open Doors USA President/CEO Dr. Carl Moeller is calling for prayers for the suffering people in the hard-hit earthquake area of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

According to reports, the powerful magnitude-7.0 quake flattened the president’s palace, hospitals, schools, the main prison and thousands of homes. Thousands are believed to have died with many still trapped in the rubble. The International Red Cross said a third of Haiti’s 9 million people may need aid. Haiti is considered the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

“The effects of the tragedy caused by this powerful earthquake has rippled across the entire world with mourning for the loss of life, while also eliciting an immediate response from the compassionate,” says Moeller. “As the reports indicate, the death toll could be in the hundreds of thousands. Thousands have been left homeless. The after-shocks are also taking an emotional toll.

“I encourage you to bring the victims of this disaster before God in prayer. Pray that the families of the victims will feel the comfort of our Lord, those trapped will quickly be found and medical help and other aid will be available to the injured. This is a real opportunity for Christians to demonstrate Christ's love in the midst of terrible suffering.”

Open Doors is urging eager volunteer to go to Christian organizations which are requesting funds to assist the victims of this terrible natural disaster.

OPEN DOORS PARTNERS BRING RELIEF TO HAITI

As ministries, U.S. troops, doctors and aid workers flow into Haiti, hundreds of thousands of quake victims struggle to find a cup of clean water or a handful of food. Initial estimates show that 50,000 to 100,000 people died in last Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude quake in Haiti. Other estimates suggest  the number may be closer to 200,000. Up to 3 million displaced people are in need of aid.

Many survivors have lost their homes and are living outdoors for fear of aftershocks causing unstable buildings to collapse.  Since so many people are homeless, a tent city for 100,000 people — an instant city the size of Burbank, California — is being erected on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.
