Christian Bookstore Owner Released from Chinese Prison

“You are the God of miracles and wonders! You demonstrate your awesome power among nations. You have redeemed your people by your strength.” (Psalm 77:14-15)

Shi and Family

On Feb 9, Chinese Christian bookstore owner Shi Weihan was released from prison - Praise God! “We are rejoicing for the good news of Shi’s release and his reunion with his family,” says Open Doors USA President/CEO Dr. Carl Moeller. “Many Christians around the world have been praying for him, his wife and two children for several years. Our prayers have been answered.”

According to Compass Direct News, Shi was found guilty of “illegal business activities” in June of 2009 by a Beijing court. Sources said Shi’s store operated legally and sold only books for which he had obtained government permission, and that his Holy Spirit Trading Company printed Bibles and Christian literature without authorization. The last three years, while in prison, Shi suffered from complications of diabetes. His physical condition slowly deteriorated as he was denied medical treatment. Shi and his wife Zhang Jing are now asking for our prayers that God will refresh their spirits together in a “quiet place” after a separation of approximately three years, and restore Shi back to full health.

China is ranked No. 16 on the Open Doors 2011 World Watch List of 50 countries which are the worst persecutors of Christians.

“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say rejoice!” (Phil 4:4). Father, this is a time to celebrate as Shi and his wife Zhang are reunited. May they be filled with Your peace and comfort at this time as they rest and abide in You. Father we also pray that while Shi was in prison, many prisoners and guards heard of You and came to a saving knowledge of Your Son through Shi’s testimony. We pray that Your name will be praised in the halls of the prison in the days ahead. Father, as You are the great physician and healer, we also pray for a full restoration of Shi’s health so that he can live many more years giving honor and glory to You. Amen
