Jailed Pakistani Mother Living in Constant Fear, Husband Says

"If the Lord delights in a man’s way, he makes his steps firm; though he stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand." Psalm 37:23-24

Asia Bibi Noreen

Asia Noreen, sentenced to death on “blasphemy” charges, has lived in constant fear since the killing of Punjab Gov. Salman Taseer. “She knows the Muslims have announced a prize on her head and would go to any lengths to kill her,” Noreen’s husband, Ashiq Masih, told Compass. Masih said his wife is “very afraid.”

Noreen’s conviction for insulting Islam’s prophet Muhammad, which she denies, triggered a violent chain of events in Pakistan, including the Jan. 4 murder of Taseer by his bodyguard after the governor voiced support for her. Masih said prison authorities had improved her security after Taseer’s killing. “She’s being kept in a separate cell with a warden deployed 24 hours,” he said. “Only I am allowed to meet her, but even I am searched completely before they bring her out for the meeting.”

Sheikhupura District Jail Superintendent Sheikh Khalid, who recently assumed charge, told Compass that Noreen was the most “high value” inmate of the prison. “She is on the hit list of several extremist organizations,” he said, “and there are reports that she might be targeted inside the jail – moreover, she has a 30 million rupee [US$350,000] prize on her head. This is enough incentive for anyone to kill her.” He said the prison had enhanced its security measures, and additional forces have been employed to guard the premises at night. “No one except her husband can meet her,” Khalid said. “I have also directed her not to eat anything given to her by any person other than the wardens deployed for her security. We are trying our best to keep her safe, but life and death are in the hands of Allah.”

Wearing a dark cloak to hide his identity, Masih was visibly nervous after meeting with her. “She was asking me about the situation outside,” he said. “I tried to console her, but she knows it’s really bad. She’s also worried about the children.” Noreen asked him to appeal for more prayers…“Please tell everyone to pray for her,” he said.

Father, we are in constant awe at Your mighty hand in our world. We ask now for Your protection and comfort over Asia Noreen, as she awaits her appeal. Give her favor in court and over-turn the death sentence. Father, also help her to continue to honor and serve You in the midst of her situation. We also ask for peace and comfort for her husband and children at this time. Amen.

Fear can be a real suffocator! But my prayer is that she knows she's not alone. Other people are gathered around her, in spirit and in prayer, and my prayer is that she'll be able to sense that.

Tom is so right, fear can grip to the point of suffocation. I believe that when Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsamne fear gripped Him because He felt as a man what we go through. But then He said not my will but thy will be done. Please know that myself and my church is praying for Favor for Asia Noren and her entire family and for Peace in her spirit that passes all understanding. God Is Able.

Father I lift Asia and her family to you and ask that you guard and protect their hearts and minds. Give them strength to persevere in their walk with you day-by-day. I pray that she would find favor in her appeal and her death sentence would be overturned. I pray that as Paul was a witness to his jailors, so Asia and her family will be as well. Give them your words to speak and uphold her with your mighty arm. Grant them your peace which surpasses all understanding.

I have been praying for Asia from the beginning of her plight, and I will not stop praying to our God the only true living God. I agree with what another woman said, Jesus is coming back very soon--Rejoice I, say Rejoice all that love him so and have him as their personal Savior Lord. Paulette

I am praying fervently for Asia that the Lord will deliver her even as Daniel was delivered from the mouth of lion! Lord, we ask for a mighty miracle for this poor woman. We ask that you would cause all the charges against her to be removed and set her free. In Jesus's name.

God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a strong mind. I pray that Asia's jailers will be amazed by her strength in the Lord and many will turn to Him as a result of her imprisonment. May God grant Asia a double portion of strength and peace for herself and her family.

Take courage in the Word of God: Psalms 37:32-33 "The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him. The Lord will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged."

"Because you belong to Christ, you are akin to me; One in the bonds unbreakable, wrought for Eternity. Spirit with Spirit joined, who can the ties undo? Binding the Christ in my heart, with the Christ in you. Because we belong to Christ, we must exalt His name; Letting the world see in Christ in us, His love for all proclaim. Lift up the Cross of Christ, His resurrection show, Until we all shall see Him, and His fullness know! Because you belong to Christ, you are akin to me; One in the bonds unbreakable, wrought for Eternity. Spirit with Spirit joined, who can the ties undo? Binding the Christ in my heart, with the Christ in you. Binding the Christ in my heart, with the Christ in you." Is it not beautiful? Praying this for you dear one, Be not afraid, Jesus wll never leave you, He is there with you always. Cast all your cares upon Him for He cares for Noreem. 1 Peter5:7

Jesus said: "My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me...no-one cna take them out of my Father's hand." Lord we pray that you fill Asia's heart and mind with the knowledge of Your presence, so that she can know the peace that passes all understanding. Lord, please find a way out for her to regain her freedom if that is Your will.
