Nigerian Christians Killed in Attack during Worship Service

Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.” Psalm 17:8-9

Gunmen armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles surrounded a church in central Nigeria and opened fire during a Monday night worship service. According to the Associated Press, the attackers killed 19 worshippers at Deeper Life Bible Church in the town of Otite in Kogi state, located 155 miles southwest of Nigeria’s capital Abuja.

Another report from Africa puts the death total at 16 and the number of seriously wounded at nine. The church’s pastor was among those killed.

According to the Associated Press, no arrests had been made as of Tuesday morning and no group had claimed responsibility for the massacre. However, the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram has been responsible for numerous churches this year and has vowed to make Nigeria an all-Islamic country, driving out all Christians. An Associated Press count puts the number killed by the Boko Haram at 660 this year. That number includes many Christians, as well as moderate Muslims and police.

"The increasingly intentional activity of Boko Haram has taken on the characteristics of a real war,” said Open Doors USA President Dr. Carl Moeller. “These are not random attacks as they're often characterized in the media. They are intentional, and they're designed with one purpose in mind; the elimination of Christianity. I call it ‘religicide’ or the intentional and systemic effort to eliminate a religious belief and its followers from a country or region.”

Open Doors USA is among a group of religious leaders and human rights advocates who sent a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton 10 days ago expressing their deep concern regarding the continuing religiously-motivated violence in Nigeria. The letter calls on the State Department to designate Boko Haram as a terrorist organization as well as to work with the Nigerian government to provide improved security for religious minorities.

The State Department’s 2011 International Religious Freedom Report released last week stated: “In Nigeria, attacks by elements of the violent extremist sect Boko Haram claimed the lives of both Christians and Muslims. The government did not effectively quell rising hostility or investigate and prosecute those responsible for violence.”

Nigeria is ranked No. 13 on the 2012 Open Doors World Watch List of 50 countries which are the worst persecutors of Christians. According to the World Watch List, Nigeria had at least 300 confirmed martyrs in 2011, although the actual number could be closer to 1,000.

Last month our Open Doors team delivered your messages sent from the prayer alert titled “Nigeria: ‘This is Becoming Genocide’” dated July 12, 2012. These messages were a great encouragement to both Christians in Nigeria and to the Open Doors team working in Nigeria.

Please consider sending a message today and let them know that you are praying for them. (Add your message below).

Father God, our heart breaks when we hear of more violence in Nigeria. On our knees we humbly petition You, asking for an end to the chaos and trauma that has ravaged the Christian community there. Father, comfort those who have lost loved ones, provide for those who are in need, and Father remove the fear that Your flock is facing; so that, though their testimony, evident in the lives of believers, many will come to know You. In Christ Name we pray, Amen.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,I thank the Lord for bringing supernatural wisdom and strength to you in the days ahead - for "His strength is made perfect in weakness." (2 Corinthians 12:9) I pray for your protection and courage. In Isaiah 41:10 the Lord declares to you:"Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

T0 SUFFER WELL In in pain, my joy shines, Lord, break my heart a thousand times If in my testing, others see the truth of grace, O burden me Send me through the fiery flame- my faith to grow, Thy glory gained Would that my path be all uphill to share that Thou art with me still, who carries me with arms impaled, who covers me with rended veil No more do I, but Christ in me decideth well my destiny If, for my soul, the Lamb obliged to suffer well, how then, shall not I ? ******************************** Beloved brethren, I live with decades of debilitating pain, which leads me in God's kindness, to pen compositions to encourage others who suffer. But I cannot imagine living one night of the persecution you endure continually; all I know is that for us who suffer, no matter how, God is All Wise, His Word is All powerful, His mercy is great, His joy is real in me, and His grace is enough for me, and for you. May God abundantly comfort in your losses, and strengthen you to pray for your attackers, as I do, that they may soon be your brothers in the true faith, as they cannot deny Him who calls them out of darkness into the Light, amen? The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you: The Lord lift up His countenance unto you, and give you His shalom shalom - His perfect peace, Amen! "O happy storm that wrecks a man on such a Rock as this". Charles H. Spurgeon

O Lord, Our hearts cry out to you for your mighty help in this storm of terror that is breaking up on our brothers and sisters in Nigeria. "We are like sheep being slaughtered all day long!" Hear, O Lord, from heave and turn this tide of evil back; save your people, heal and defend, we ask Thee. Your servants are helpless before this storm; command, we pray, "Peace. Be still!" We pray in our only hope, the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Heavenly Father, I come to you on behalf of my brothers and sisters who are under attack for their faith in You and your Son. May you hold them in Your loving arms and comfort those who have lost loved ones. May You be a shield around them and protect them from the evil that seeks to destroy them. And may You give them strength and encouragement in knowing that You will never leave them and that we - the Body of Christ - have not forgotten them. Have mercy on those who seek to kill them that they may come to salvation through your Son.

Dear brothers and sisters in Nigeria, My heart is stirred to prayer with you. What a terrible loss and trial you have experienced. Also, I am remembering the children you have lost parents. My children knew the loss of their father a young age...but not through such hateful means as you have experienced. God is faithful and loving. He has promised to never leave us or forsake us! I am praying that you will know His comfort. May He...our Great Shepherd, give your rest. In Christ's great name, cathy

Nothing is wasted in the Lord's hands. What seems impossible to bear for us will receive greater glory when God's purposes are revealed. If the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church I look forward to seeing the harvest from this harsh time of seeding. May God strengthen his children, bring forth the fruit of righteousness and bring many more into the fold through all these trials. God is with you. While I weep for you, my brothers and sisters in Nigeria, I also entrust you to our loving Father knowing that the battle belongs to our Lord. May he be your shelter and your banner until he brings the victory out of what looks like ashes for the whole world to see. You are in my prayers.

Though we are separated by distance, we are still family. You are living in tough times and we may not be able to fully understand your pain and be there to comfort you but I want you to know my kids and I are praying for you. Yehowah our Father remembers you and will honour your unwavering trust in Him. Your reward will be great.

Lord, I ask that you turn this tragedy into a greater good, as You promise that "all things work together for good for those who love God & are called according to His purposes." Lord, I pray that those who torment your chosen people will find no rest in their conscience and no peace in their souls, & that they would be haunted by the faith they witnessed in Your people. My the Holy Spirit work in His mysterious way to lead these tormenters to faith in You. Bring the Comforter to those who have been traumatized and affected by this act of hate & violence and show them Your love, Your peace that passes all understanding, and a glimpse of your glory now when they need You the most. Make Your presence known by a tender and healing touch in this time of great need. May we exercise forgiveness to those who intend harm to Your people just as You did while suffering for us on the cross. The victory is ours in Christ Jesus! Let's keep our eyes on Him!

I was so sorry to hear about all your sufferings, but I surely know God has also preapared great blessings for His faithful children from Nigeria. I pray that He will give you strenght and faith through all this and surround you with His perfect protection! Romans 8:35,37 " Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us..."
