Martyr’s Widow and Small Son Need Your Encouragement

Pastor Neil and his wife Shiromi moved to Ampara, in the southern part of Sri Lanka, with a heart to minister to the traumatized youths in the area, many of whose families had been displaced by civil war. They ministered sacrificially, often in the midst of their own hunger, bringing reconciliation in families. Shiromi also helped women who were victims of domestic violence.

Loved by many in their village, their ministry grew. But some were not happy with their work and threats began to mount. Then, on February 18, 2008, just outside their home, a bullet pierced Pastor Neil’s heart, ending his life immediately. People who knew the pastor believed that it was a hired gun that killed him and that it was religiously motivated.

At only 37 years of age Pastor Neil knew that the day would come when his earthly life would end. But, while seeing the inevitability of his imminent death, he was convinced that it was not the end saying, “After me, thousands will rise to proclaim Christ’s message.” Pastor Neil’s wife Shiromi and their little boy, then a two-year-old, were also shot in the attack, but they survived. Open Doors provided support and medical care for the family.

Now, three years later the small house church in Ampara is growing under Shiromi’s care and guidance. A full-time church worker helps her. Besides preaching and worshiping every Sunday, Shiromi visits the members on weekdays. Shiromi and her five-year-old son continue to build their lives in the very place where Pastor Neil was taken from them but, at times, the trauma of that day still fills their minds. Today as you pray for them, please consider also sending a letter of encouragement.

Lord God, Your daughter Shiromi and her son Seradh have suffered so much through the violence in their village. Comfort them with Your mighty arm letting them know, as one Body in Christ, that we care and are praying for them. Protect them and bring increase to the work they continue to do for Your name sake. Amen
