Uzbekistan - Haydarov

Tohar Haydarov (27), a Christian from Gulistan, Uzbekistan was arrested in January 2010; then in March he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for possession and manufacturing of drugs; charges that he and others vehemently deny.

Born a Muslim but converted to Christianity, he was constantly under pressure to return to Islam. Then in January the police conducted a “house search” but did not allow witness into Tohar apartment until after the drugs were discovered. Fellow church members insist that the case has been fabricated against him and that the police planted the drugs. At his court hearing witness said that he showed signs of having been badly beaten, bruised, swollen and exhausted.

Church members, relatives, neighbors and fellow workers all wrote petitions on his behalf testifying that he is an innocent and good man to no avail. In July Tohar was transferred to a labor camp about 250 miles from his home town. Since then he has been visited twice by church members who attest that he is in relatively good health. At present, an appeal is being prepared for the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan.

Tohar has asked for our prayers; specifically that authorities will acquit and release him. In addition you can send him letters and cards of encouragement letting him know that he is not alone. Please keep the messages non-political or say anything negative against Islam; instead fill them with the hope and peace of Jesus as he awaits his court date.
