4 People Killed During UN Protest

October 27, 2016 by Janelle P in

Four people have been killed, and 14 injured, in Bangui during a protest against the United Nations in the Central African Republic.

According to the U.N., the deaths occurred when U.N. peacekeepers exchanged fire with armed protestors. This was in response to a protest against the U.N. presence in the country. The group of Central African protestors are demanding the U.N. mission to withdraw because it is failing to protect the people.

The fighting started when hundreds of protestors demanded that the troops leave the country. They were carrying posters, throwing rocks and shouting at the U.N. troops. Warning shots were reportedly used by the U.N. to warn the protesters. The U.N. used live bullets and said its soldiers only used tear gas.

The Central African Republic has been struggling to recover from chaos following March 2012 when Muslim Seleka forces overthrew the government.

Keep Bangui and this situation in prayer. Pray for peace to be restored in this country. Pray that the U.N. peacekeepers, and those in oppositions of them, can come to an agreement. Pray for the families of those who died. Lastly, pray for the additional 14 who’ve been injured. Pray for a speedy recovery.
