Afghan refugee: ‘There is Jesus in Afghanistan’

We recently had the rare opportunity to speak with a believer who was forced to flee his home in Afghanistan. What he shared with us should leave us encouraged us the church is still alive in Afghanistan—and also on our knees in prayer.

“I want every American to know: There is love of Jesus is working in Afghanistan,” he told us.

But this believer didn’t mince words about the danger that followers of Jesus in his home country are facing: “[Christians] are the first target for Taliban. If they find out about you, it’s like a death warrant.”

Listen as he shares what’s happening.

Around the world today, more than 360 million Christians face high levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith. That’s 1 in 7 Christians—suffering simply because they follow Jesus.

And Afghanistan is leading the way for persecution as the world’s most dangerous country for Christians. As this believer’s words remind us, our Afghan brothers and sisters are either in hiding or on the run. As he says, “You’re always living inside the cage.” What would it be like to go through life that way?

Please take a few minutes and listen to these audio clips and pray for the remnant of Afghan believers who are secretly building the church there. And pray for Christian refugees who have left everything they know and are struggling to rebuild their lives.

Pray that God will be ever-close to Afghan believers both inside and outside the country—telling them in unimaginable ways that He is their refuge, their strength and their song (Psalm 91).

As the psalmist reminds us, God has always provided a place of refuge for His people. Sometimes, that’s literal. But sometimes, God’s safe shelter looks like Christians lifting one another up in prayer.

When you join your family through prayer, you play a vital role in providing God’s shelter.
