Did You Know- China Edition

Being one of the largest nations on the planet, we hear a lot about China in the news. But did you know:

  •       That the panda bear is considered a national treasure in China, but only 1,000 remain in the wild

  •       China is bordered by 14 countries: North Korea, Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam

  •       A well-educated Chinese reader recognizes approximately 5,000–7,000 characters, but there are over 40,000 Characters (though most are not used today)

  •       China has a land mass of over 3,700,000 square miles

  •       Macau is known as the ‘Las Vegas of China’ but makes about 3 times the revenue of Las Vegas

  • The pipa is a pear shaped, four stringed guitar-like instrument used in traditional Chinese music

Christianity continues to grow rapidly. Sources report that government representatives have been in dialogue with some house church leaders, leading many to believe the government has finally understood the house church is not a political threat to the state. Yet severe repression continues for some. In April, the Shouwang church in Beijing was barred from meeting in its new premises and one of its pastors was put under house arrest. In July a pastor was sentenced to two years in a labor camp for organizing ‘illegal meetings’.
