ISIS Activity In Syria and Iraq What has historically been known as the “Cradle of Civilization” is now the modern day setting for destruction. This area covers what we know as Iraq and Syria. Today, ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) is claiming this region as their own, and overtaking it with extreme force, in hopes of establishing an Islamic State. ISIS has been named the wealthiest militant organization in the world and recently split from al-Qaeda in February of 2014. Their goal since their formation in 2004 has always been to establish a caliphate, or a strict Islamic State. Unfortunately, the crisis in Syria allowed for ISIS’s successful attack on Iraq. Their takeover of Mosul was quite significant, being Iraq’s second most populous city. They have a base in Syria that has allowed for further expansion faster with a secure base. ISIS has also been known to self-fund itself through oil sales. The area of Kurdish control poses a serious military threat to ISIS with their Kurdish security forces. The future will determine whether the Kurds can maintain this advantage, or dissolve under the pressure. While ISIS is expanding and persecuting Christians throughout this region, we ask you to pray. Share this post on social media, and inform your friends how they can be strategically praying for these believers. Prayer changes things because God is in control, even in an area taken over by the extremist group ISIS.
