Meriam Ibrahim Finally Free: How Your Voice Made a Powerful Difference

meriam free By Kristin Wright I was shocked, amazed, and moved to tears when I first saw the news on Monday morning that Meriam Ibrahim was walking free from prison. But my excitement over Meriam’s release was short-lived as she was taken into custody at the airport in Khartoum less than 24 hours after her release. Thankfully, after a brief detainment, Meriam Ibrahim is finally free. They were temporarily detained for several hours over questions related to their documents, according to Marie Harf, a spokeswoman for the U.S. State Department. She added that Sudan has guaranteed to the U.S. that Meriam and her family are now safe. All charges against Meriam have been dropped, and she has been reunited with her family. Meriam’s case is an incredible example of the impact of both prayer and international pressure. There is little doubt that this courageous woman would still be in prison today if not for the action of people around the world who took the time to share her story, gather to pray and advocate for her release, and write emails and letters on her behalf. How Your Voice Made a Difference The past several weeks have been a whirlwind of advocacy on Meriam’s case, and that’s why I want to take this time to say “thank you” for being a voice for this courageous woman. Over the past few weeks, thousands of people shared our calls to action on Meriam’s situation (What You Can Do to Help Meriam and 3 Ways to Help Meriam Ibrahim), writing to their members of Congress and sharing the information with their friends. On June 12, 2014, Open Doors USA co-sponsored an event in front of the White House, with your support, calling for the administration to speak out for Meriam Ibrahim. Within hours of the White House event, the U.S. State Department issued a statement on Meriam Ibrahim, calling for her release. Days later, on June 18, 2014, Meriam’s chains were reportedly removed and she was transported from her prison cell to a clinic. On June 23, 2014, she was released from prison. After a brief detainment at the airport in Khartoum, Meriam was finally freed on June 24, 2014. Thank You for Speaking Out At Open Doors USA, we are so grateful for individuals like you, who took the time to share the information on Meriam’s case and speak out on her behalf. This courageous woman would still be in prison today if not for the persistent action of individuals like you. Thank you for being a voice for Meriam Ibrahim and her two small children. Thank you for speaking out on her behalf, and helping to keep this Christian woman alive. Your voice matters. Your actions have made a difference for Meriam Ibrahim, and you can continue to make a difference for other persecuted believers throughout the world.
