Somalia Truck Bomb Attack Kills at Least 300—Death Toll Climbing
Please pray for the situation in Somalia where a truck bomb in the capital Mogadishu has killed 300 people and injured nearly 400 over the weekend (Oct 14). This is the worst attack the capital has ever seen. Open Doors has been informed that at least two Christians died in the attack, while at least three were seriously injured.
The city has been dumped into chaos with dozens still missing. The death toll is expected to rise with people believed to be buried in the rubble of destroyed buildings. Families have spent the past two days frantically looking for loved ones.
Turkey has responded to a government request for international help as some of Somalia’s hospitals cannot treat patients with complicated injuries. “Some of the wounded need special care that cannot be treated here. Several will be flown to Turkey today after they answered our request for help,” Abdirahman Omar Osman, Somalia’s information minister told Al Jazeera.
Although they have not claimed responsibility yet, it is assumed that the Islamic radical militant al Shabaab is behind the attack. They are fighting for a strict form of Islam to be implemented across Somalia. Over the last few years, a lot of territory has been taken from the group, but they have proved resilient. They have been able to orchestrate several smaller attacks in the capital, on other government-controlled areas and even across the border on communities in Kenya.
Somalia is 2nd on the 2017 WWL and Christians have no freedom here. Anyone known or suspected of being Christian faces execution. Martyrdom is common.
- Pray for God’s comfort to families of the Christians who died. Pray for good recovery for those who were injured.
- Pray for God’s mercy to all emergency workers as they seek to help identify injured and identify the deceased.
- Pray that God would build His Kingdom through these circumstances and that Somali people will come to seek truth with all their hearts and come to Him in faith.
- Pray for peace to be restored and that the government with the help of international partners like Ethiopia, Kenya and the US will be able to thwart the operations of the al Qaida linked al Shabaab.
