I came to Christ as a college student in the early 1980s. Before, I found the Bible boring and difficult to understand, but suddenly it came alive – God spoke to me through it of His love and grace to me in ways that were real, dynamic, powerful, life-changing and utterly relevant. So first I fell in love with God and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Not long after that I fell in love with His word, the Bible, and I’ve been in love with them ever since. I’m now 54 and look back on a life full of suffering and deprivation – but God has been completely faithful to His promises – and I wouldn’t have known what those were if it hadn’t been for the Bible.
Some years ago I decided to start memorising verses of scripture. I learned one or more a week – my memory is terrible but I managed it. I have now memorised about 300 verses and I recite them each day in my personal quiet time. Often it’s a bit automatic – but sometimes one verse leaps out at me and I realise it’s EXACTLY what I need. The Bible is truer than true – and time spent reading it is never wasted but is always one of the most worthwhile uses of anyone’s time.
