Two Men Arrest for Transporting Bibles

September 12, 2016 by Open Doors in Uncategorized

Please pray for our Hian and Phung in Laos. While transporting Bibles last Saturday, they were apprehended by Vietnamese authorities. The police confiscated their motorcycles, which were provided by Open Doors, and sent them to jail in Southern Laos.

Vietnam is number 20 on the Open Doors World Watch List, and one of the five remaining countries in the world still ruled by a communist party. Although the dominant religion is Buddhism, the Catholic Church holds a strong presence as the largest Christian group. The government and the Catholic Church have a rocky relationship largely due to a perceived “foreign power” associated with Catholics, resulting from their association with the West. On top of this, there is divide between Catholics and Protestants, illustrated through the phrase, “Catholics are French, Protestants are American”. Recently there was a revised version of Law No. 92, potentially allowing Christians more freedom. However because the government seeks control, not much change is expected to come from this revision.

Please for the safety and freedom for Hian and Phung, and other believers in Vietnam. Pray for the work of Open Doors and for all who are persecuted for their faith in this country. Pray for the Gospel to spread, in spite of this set back.
