Update on Rohingya Persecution

September 19, 2017 by Janelle P in Asia

A few weeks ago, we reported about the most persecuted minority in the world – the Rohingya Muslims. This group is continually denied basic rights and treated as illegal.

The word “genocide” has been attached to the situation as the situation worsens with Rohingyas fleeing to Bangladesh.

For generations, Rohingya Muslims have called Myanmar home, but now, their government seems to be systematically purging them.

Each day more extreme

Since our last report, the estimated number of Rohingyas that have fled to Bangladesh has risen from at least 123,000 to more than 400,000.

Aung San Suu Kyi has continued to be criticized by global leaders. She claimed in her first national address on the crisis that the situation was not very severe and that the government has made efforts to improve conditions for the group.

Are Suu Kyi’s claims correct?

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has differing statements. “We have told Myanmar, they are your citizens, you must take them back, keep them safe, give them shelter,” she told the United Nations General Assembly in New York. She said the Rohingya are facing an, “unbearable human catastrophe”.

In a BBC interview, on Rohingya refugee, Abdul Majid, said that they would return to Myanmar if it were safe for them to be there.

Your role

We ask you to continue to join us in prayer. There are so many complex factors to this situation, but we know that there are believers living within this context and within the Rohingya group.

Join us to pray for believers to endure through the crisis while also looking for ways to share of eternal hope with those around them.

Pray for Aung San Suu Kyi – if it is God’s will, pray that He would change her hardened heart into one of compassion and truth while dealing with the crisis.

Pray for the Rohingya people. The Muslims and Christians that make up this group are experiencing so many extreme emotions and trials right now. Pray for God to guide them from moment to moment, when they cannot even see beyond today’s sorrow. Pray that they would be given favor and that all their needs would be provided for in this turbulent time.
