[Urgent Prayer] Palm Sunday Church Bombing in Egypt Kills at Least 42

April 9, 2017 by Brian in

Two separate church bombings in Egypt have killed 42 people and injured more than 100, according to the BBC.

The Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the deadly blasts—which took place on Palm Sunday, one of the holiest days for the Christian church.

The first explosion occurred at St. George’s CopticMembers of an ethnic religious group from North Africa but primarily Egypt, where they are the largest Christian denomination in the country. Church in Tanta and killed 29. The second blast took place in Alexandria at St. Mark’s Coptic Church, killing 13.

Violence against Christians in Egypt has been on the rise. Last year, 25 Christians were murdered in a church bombing in Cairo during December.

The deadly attack, occurring on Palm Sunday, is a reminder of the wickedness and violence many Christians face in Egypt and around the world. The powers of darkness are present, and Satan’s desire to wipe out every believer who bears the name of Christ is real.

But we are also reminded of the power of Jesus to overcome sin, the powers of darkness—and even death itself.

These devastating attacks happened on Palm Sunday, but we know Resurrection is coming.

Please join us in urgent prayer for the Coptic Christians in Egypt.

  • Pray for immediate aid to reach those injured from the blasts.
  • Pray for the believers who’ve faced this terror first-hand and lost loved ones and close friends.
  • Pray for justice. Pray that this terrible event will draw the attention of world leaders to focus more heavily on human rights and religious freedom in Egypt.
  • Pray for the church in Egypt to be both comforted and strengthened in the midst of this senseless tragedy.
