Mary*, a volunteer Christian teacher at a Hindu boys’ school in Sri Lanka’s Matale District, has been teaching Christianity at this school for the past 5 years. Even though all the other teachers in this school have been allocated classrooms, Mary has been singled out. Her request to the school principal for a classroom falls on deaf ears. The principal has requested that she holds Christianity classes outdoors under a tree. Though discouraged, for the sake of the children she persists true to her calling. Pray for Mary and scores of other Christian teachers who undergo similar persecution in schools.

Father, we lift before Your throne of grace Your faithful servant Mary. We give thanks for her faithfulness in teaching about Christ in this Hindu school despite the lack of a classroom and the obvious intent to hinder her work. We give thanks for the opportunity You have afforded her to teach there and for the provision even of the tree to shade her and the class as they meet. In ways, this is a short story and a small matter we bring before You, but how easy it would for her to be discouraged and give up, to take offense at the obvious effort to thwart this work. But You have given her a heart of humility and a commitment to proclaim Your Word to those living in spiritual darkness. We pray, therefore, that You will help her to know that we are praying for her and, even more, to see Your presence at work in her. Give her glimpses of the work You are doing in and through her. In the name of Jesus who invites us, however insignificant our work in the world’s eyes, into the glorious service of His kingdom. Amen.
