Earthquake Rocks Bukoba, Tanzania

September 15, 2016 by Janelle P in Africa

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake rocked the Bukoba region of Tanzania on Sunday, Sept 11, close to the border with Rwanda and Uganda, not far from Lake Victoria. Please pray for the church in Bukoba as they struggle to rebuild following the quake that claimed the lives of at least 14 people and injured more than 200. The quake adds more difficulties for the church that is already facing a recent rise in troubles. While mainland Tanzania is roughly half Christian, the Bukoba area has seen a rise in persecution in recent years, intensified by militant activity in NE Kenya and Somalia. Just last week, we shared a report about the attack on Lutheran-run Sebastian Kolowa Memorial University. Pray for the Lord’s working in the lives of all those who have lost loved ones in this latest tragedy. Pray for the church in this area to be used of the Lord to bring hope and comfort to those affected. Pray that He will use this event to draw many closer to Himself.

Father, we do pray for the Christians of Tanzania as they continue to struggle with recent attacks even while they now recover from the Sept 11 earthquake. We pray Your comfort to embrace those who have lost loved ones and those who are recovering from injuries. Heal them, Father—physically, emotionally and spiritually. We pray for continued opportunities for the church to reach out to the community with help and compassion—with the comfort that they have received from yYou. May You use even this tragedy to draw many unto Yourself in saving faith and the hope of Christ in the midst of the darkness that seems to have fallen upon them. In the Name of Jesus our Healer, Amen.
