“God is Faithful!” says Kenyan Widow

May 22, 2013 by Open Doors in General

Almost a year ago, we asked you to pray and send letters to Gladys Juma, whose husband Benjamin was burned to death by a Muslim mob while he was taking part in an evangelism mission in Mombasa.
Gladys recently wrote a letter to Open Doors, thanking supporters for all the letters and prayer support she has received. She writes:

Dear Open Doors friends, I want to take the opportunity to thank you for your prayer and support for me and my four children since the murder of my husband almost a year ago.

I want you all to know that God has been so faithful to me. He has given me and the children a lot of physical and spiritual favour. We are healthy and have everything we need. And we have been showered with love and care from Christians around the world. The Lord has been using your prayers to strengthen me. There have been times when I remained standing only because I knew someone somewhere was lifting me up to our Lord in prayer.

Ben was my rock and my pillar. Now almost a year after his death, we still don’t know exactly what happened that day when he died. But God through His Holy Spirit has comforted me in the knowledge that all that happened to Ben was for His purposes. I don’t dare question that because I know He is the Potter and I am the clay.

And we are encouraged to see how Ben’s testimony and my journey of faith have been encouraging fellow believers in this difficult region to stand firm in the faith despite their hardship. We have learnt through Ben’s example that we need to be ready to face similar fates. We don’t know if or when it will be our turn to die for Christ. But we need to be ready.

Thank you also for the love you have been showing my children in praying for them. I am so thankful for the healing God has been doing in their lives. May God heal and bless all of you who prayed for me as He has healed and blessed us.

You can send letters of support to believers like Gladys, who are in need of encouragement.

Father God, how we praise You for Your healing power at work in the lives of Gladys and her children. We pray Your grace to flow through Gladys as she seeks to forgive her persecutors. We pray that Your presence in her, demonstrated by her tenacious faith in the midst of tragic circumstances, will continue to be a powerful witness to those around her, drawing many into saving faith. And as we consider the rising violence against Christians in eastern Kenya, we pray for Open Doors workers there who seek to strengthen the church to stand firm through theological and discipleship training. Thank You for Bible distribution and the community development projects they lead. May You bring much fruit to their labor that Your church will grow strong and faithful in the midst of persecution. In the name of Jesus in whose faith we stand, Amen.
