Immediate Released Ordered for 15 Acteal Prisoners!

April 17, 2013 by Open Doors in Latin America/Caribbean

The First Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) ordered the immediate release of 15 Indians involved in the 1997 Acteal case. The men had been convicted of murder, aggravated assault and unauthorized possession of firearms restricted to military use, following the December 22, 1997, massacre of 45 indigenous Tzotzil in the community of Acteal. The victims, mostly women and children, belonged to the indigenous organization Las Abejas-The Bees.

The intervening years have been filled with appeals, direct injunctions, petitions for review and, finally, recognition of innocence before the highest court in the land. A group of prisoners was released previously. Of the 17 remaining prisoners, 15 are now free after more than 15 years in prison.

The Open Doors Mexico team traveled to meet the men and celebrate their freedom. They requested continued prayer for the two remaining brothers in jail, for peace between these brothers and Las Abejas and for a peaceful relocation of these 15 brothers and their families.

Father, we praise You for Your watchful care over these men during the 15 years they have been in prison for false charges of murder. And now we joyfully praise You for their release. Continue to watch over them, Lord, as they are reunited with their families and seek to be reestablished peacefully in another area. In the midst of our praise, we stop to remember the two remaining Christians in prison, praying that You will continue to sustain them, give them hope, and bring about their release soon. We pray that there might be reconciliation between those who have been released and members of Las Abejas and that the truth of Your gospel might draw to Yourself those who are living in spiritual darkness. In the name of Jesus who sets free those living in bondage to sin, Amen!
