Following a series of threats and assaults against Christian leaders in Bangladesh, unknown assailants attacked Mr. Alok Sen with sharp weapons in Kamalapur, Faridpur in the southern part of Bangladesh on November 25. Alok is the general secretary of the Faridpur chapter of Oikya Parishad, an interfaith committee representing Hindu, Buddhist and Christian communities. He is now undergoing treatment for his injuries at the Faridpur Medical College and Hospital (FMCH).
The victim’s wife, Shikha Sen, said that two men young men in their early twenties called Alok out of their home and began hacking and slashing the pastor around 4:00 pm in front of his house, leaving him critically injured. His doctor reported that Alok suffered serious cuts to both of his hands and legs. The Faridpur Thana police officer in-charge said that they are still trying to identify the attackers.
This attack comes in the wake of recent death threats to 10 Christian pastors in Rangpur district of northern Bangladesh. The pastors received the letter containing the death threats on November 25. The anonymous letter was sent to a leader of the Bangladesh Baptist Church Sangha (BBCS) in Rangpur, Rev. Barnobas Hembrom, and listed nine other pastors in the district. The letter ominously stated that, “Those who are preaching Christianity in Bangladesh must leave this world one by one.”
The local police were informed immediately and are now providing protection to the Baptist church.
Father, we pray for Pastor Alok Sen and the other pastors, that You will cause them to walk in the safety of Your Spirit. Grant them wisdom, strength and courage as they boldly continue to preach and do Your work. We pray too that You will cover the entire nation’s Christians in Your peace and in safety in the midst of these and many other such incidents. Soften the hearts, Lord, of these Islamic fundamentalists, that their weapons may be turned into plowshares, that they might turn their hearts to You in saving faith, and that they might accomplish Your will, lifting high the Name of Christ. We pray this in the Name of Jesus, who has won the victory and overcome the world, Amen.
