Formed as God set the foundations of the earth and moved continents into place, Colombia sits on a ring of mountains and volcanoes which continue to tremble; the intense seismic forces reminding the world of the Creator’s power. Dark forces are also at work there attempting to silence the worship of Christ and crush the Word of God.
Francisco Melendez (46), known as “Chico”, loved Christ. Spreading the gospel through songs of worship and praise was pure joy. But on April 13, 2009, while on his way home, he and his brother-in- law were both shot and killed, silencing their praises on earth, releasing them to worship before the throne of God and praise the Creator face to face.
“…he who looks at the earth, and it trembles, who touches the mountains, and they smoke. I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.
This week join Open Doors and all brothers and sisters in Christ in remembering Francisco Melendez and his brother-in-law, who praised the name of God to the end of their earthly lives. Pray that their families are encouraged to know that their songs of praise blessed all who heard them, their notes still echo in believing hearts, calling unbelievers home. Please also pray for all people in Colombia, for the persecuted Christians, that they look to the mountains created by God, raising their voices as one in His praise. And for the unbelievers and the persecutors, that as God turns the mountains by their roots, so too will he turn their hearts to be rooted in Jesus Christ.
“When the earth and all its people quake, it is I who hold its pillars firm.” (Psalm 75:3) Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us the gift of song so that we might praise the amazing works of Your hands. Thank you for Your servants Francisco Melendez and his brother-in-law and the music which honored You, bringing lost souls to join in the eternal praise of Your name. We pray too for their families, asking that they are comforted in knowing that Francisco and his brother-in-law gave their lives leading others to the Savior they loved so dearly. And dear Father, as the earth trembles causing continents, governments, regimes and systems to shudder, we ask that the souls of those who persecute our brothers and sisters be shaken at the very roots, so that in reaching for help they reach for You. Amen
