SANTA ANA, Calif. (Oct. 1, 2012) – Esther is a widowed mother of six from northern Nigeria. She lost her husband in a vicious attack by an extremist group that is located primarily in Northern Nigeria More, an Islamic extremist group responsible for hundreds attacks on Nigerian Christians over the last few years.
She tries to make ends meet for her six children, but it is difficult to do with her small tailoring business. Esther is a woman who most would expect to be in a continuous grief-stricken condition. Though she misses her husband deeply, she has a contagious, joyful spirit. Her peaceful presence makes it difficult to believe she has endured so much pain.
When asked how Christians in the West could be One With Them (persecuted Christians), she said, “Share our stories so more and more people will know about the situation in Nigeria so they can pray for us.”
One With Them is an Open Doors USA campaign which encourages Christians to stand in solidarity with their brothers and sisters in Christ.
This year Open Doors USA is providing a unique way for Christians to share the message of persecuted Christians around the world. Open Doors is encouraging Christians to use their artistic gifts in the One Body-Many Gifts online competition to show the world that they are One With Them. Christians can enter written, video or other artistic material at http://www.OneWithThem.com/contest. Other users will vote on their favorite entries. The top 25 submissions will be announced on Saturday. The deadline to enter is Oct. 24.
The contest is paving the way for The International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP). IDOP will be observed on Sunday, Nov. 11. There are multiple free resources available for this special day at http://www.OneWithThem.com
Another way Christians can stand in solidarity with persecuted Christians is by ordering One With Them wristbands. These silicone wristbands, which look like barbed wire, come in two sizes; regular (20cm) and large (22cm). They cost $1 each and can be ordered at the One With Them website.
