The Supreme Court of Pakistan has scheduled a hearing this Wednesday, July 22, to rule on an appeal of Aasyia (Asia) Bibi’s conviction and execution sentence of alleged blasphemy of the prophet Muhammad in 2009. The Christian mother was convicted in 2010.
The hearing on Wednesday could be the first of at least two or three more before a final decision is given by the Supreme Court. This apparently is the last opportunity to secure her freedom.
Aasiya was the first woman ever to be sentenced to death on the basis of Pakistan’s infamous blasphemy law.
The most important people to pray for are the judges of the Supreme Court. Their rulings create precedents for lower courts. Aslo pray for Aasiya’s legal team, who are also under threats. Their lives, families and careers are on the line.
Of course prayer for Aasiya is equally or even more important. She has spent much of her six years in prison in solitary confinement to protect her from inmates and even some guards. She has suffered abuse and threats. She is reportedly in poor health.
Aasiya, 50, is a mother of five. Her family has been forced to flee the country.
